August Johannesson Edberg, b: 5/27/1853 on one of a collection of farms known locally as Vastergarden (meaning Gardens of the West), Edum Rote, Larv Parish, Skaraborg lan (county) in the Southern part of Sweden. He died 11/12/1924 in Belle Plaines, MN a nearby town to the village of East Union, MN. He is buried at the East Union Lutheran Church cemetery; the marker reads “August Edberg, 27 July, 1852- 12 November, 1924.” The following e-mail was received from a relative: ” My grandmother was Emma Helen Edberg Johnson; her mother & father were Helen Johnson Edberg and August Edberg. I remember being in their home in East Union, near Carver,MN when I was just a few years old in the late 1930’s. August Edberg was killed by a falling tree in the 1920’s. Helen Edberg died at my grandmothers house in 1937 or 1939 of diabetes; they are both buried in the church cemetery in East Union. I remember Emma and Elmer Edberg (twins), Ardie Edberg, Walter Edberg, and an older sister who died in childbirth and whose name I do no know.”

Lottie came to America as a young girl with her parents and older brother August Johannesson Edberg. They came to East Union, Dahlgren twp., Carver County, MN, T115N-R24W Sec 35. There was also a West Union in Hancock twp, Carver county, MN T114N – R25W, section 1, 1881-1884. (located at the southern part of Lake Maria, near the towns of Gotha. Both East & West Union settlements are founded in 1858. Per the Compendium of History and Biography of Carver and Hennepin Counties, MN [1915] by R.I. Holcombe & Wm. H. Bingham: “West Union Evangelical Lutheran Church, in the NE part of the township, was organized by Rev. P.Carlson; a frame church was built before the Civil War.” In the Carver County Historical publication In the Tracks of the Swedish Settlers in Carver County by Susanna Thilquist, in 1988, “The West Union congregation was organized in December 1858, about six months after East Union. The Union Settlement had expanded rapidly, especially to the west and south. The people in the west wished to have a closer church. The 2 churches were thus named East & West Union.” (Union meant the intersection of 2 adjoining townships.)
Lottie Edberg of East Union met & married J.J. Wicklund of West Union at East Union Lutheran Church. They move to Dakota Territory to homestead Sec 8 of Ramsey twp. in McCook County living there 1884-death in 1929. Never seeing Edberg’s again or MN she cried. Their Application for Homestead of 5/31/1884 reads: “John settled Oct. 1884;broke 5acre 1889; 8a. 1885; 6a. 1886; 39 acres total; 35 a. fenced & 3a trees. Improvements:14×20 frame house, 8×12 addition, barn of lumber+sod, outhouses, granery (sic) & 2 mills. Value $800.00. They helped start Center Lutheran Church in 1888 per Church History: “Center Church was built in 1891; J. Wicklund, a stone mason, builds foundation.” (still in good condition, 2001). “Board of Admin.minutes 1st meeting, Jan. 1883, Deacon: J. J.Wiklund, Ostra Roten (eastern zone). Subscriptions, Oct. 1890: Jan (John) Wiklund ped (paid) $500.”
Lottie (Lotta Johanssesdotter Edberg is maternal grandmother (MM = Mother’s Mother)
She came to America a girl of 5 years of age in July 1862; she became a citizen as part of Edberg family Naturalization process when her father took the name ‘Edberg’ (rock-solid allegiance) to avoid confusion with many of the same name as his, Andersson.

Lottie Edberg Wicklund & John J. Wicklund had five children:
i Blanche Ellen Wicklund, who married Arvid Anderson and had 4 children, Vincent, Verda and two others.
Blanche Ellen Wicklund, was born Sept. 25, 1888 in Dakota Territory before it became a State. She was baptized as “Blance (sic) . She died of cancer on 10/5/1949 in Santa Clara, CA. Arvid “H.” Anderson, was born October 14, 1889 the only son of 13 children born to his parents. He died February 26, 1953 in Menlo Park, CA.
